DU cut offs as seats still vacant

NEW DELHI: While Delhi University has been harping on how its four-year undergraduate programme has attracted the largest number of pre-admission registrations in the varsity's history, the ground reality seems a bit different as seats are still going vacant in many colleges.

The university administration on Friday notified that there will be two more cutoffs for all categories. This is the first time that general category admissions have continued even as the new academic session got underway. The list, however, will be open mostly for the reserved categories—SC/ST and OBC.

According to a notification from the dean of students' welfare, the university decided to release two more cutoffs—the ninth and tenth—"for all categories and courses. The ninth cutoff will be declared on July 27 and admissions will take place on July 27 and 29. The tenth cutoff will be declared on July 30 and admission will be held on July 30 and 31." The notification asked the colleges to fill all the seats.

The total number of registrations—online and offline, including all categories—was 2.49 lakh, which is over a lakh more than 2012's record number—1.47 lakh. A total of 1,26,704 registrations were completed offline and 1,22,957 online. The online registration has tripled this year—a 200% increase. The total number of scheduled castes/scheduled tribe/persons with disability (SC/ST/ PwD) applicants has also seen a massive—"more than 100%"—increase since last year when 23,000 enrolled.

Just a few days ago, pro-vice-chancellor of DU, Sudheesh Pachauri, had told reporters that "DU has had the highest number of applications this year".
